Art Metal / Jewelry Faculty
The Art Metal / Jewelry program prepares students towards a professional career in jewelry arts and related areas. The program emphasizes craft skills, attention to detail, critical thinking and creativity.
Students receive a strong foundation in technical vocabulary and skills of working with metal, while being encouraged to experiment with alternative materials and techniques. In addition to cultivating respect for craft and technical skills, students learn to recognize jewelry and object making as meaningful not for the monetary value of materials employed, but rather for the possibility of an object possessing visual, tactile and conceptual qualities that deliver a unique message. Students are encouraged to look at jewelry and objects as intrinsically capable of unique expression.
Classes in Art Metal / Jewelry have been taught at Stephen F. Austin State University for over 37 years. Professor James Snyder originally founded the program, leading it for over 35 years. Assistant Professor Jennifer Sholtis headed the Art Metal/Jewelry Program from 2003 to 2005.
Assistant Professor Natalya Pinchuk headed the Program from 2005 to 2007. Visiting Assistant Professor Gary Schott headed the Program from 2007 to 2008. Assistant Professor Lauren McAdams will head the Program beginning in Fall 2008.

BA, BFA Curriculum
ART240 (Art Metal and Jewelry I) concentrates on the basics of design, manipulation of metal and tool use for small metalwork. Students may repeat ART440 (Art Metal and Jewelry II) up to five times. Progressing through levels A-E, students study advanced fabrication, surface treatment and patination, casting and stone setting, advanced forming, repoussé and chasing, and enameling. In the final year students may enroll in ART491 (Special Problems in Art) as a jewelry course designed to meet the individual needs and desires of the student. Students working towards a BFA degree, with concentration in Art Metal/Jewelry, must organize a BFA Thesis Exhibition in their last year of study.
Before enrolling in ART240 (Art Metal and Jewelry I), it is advised that students take ART100 (Drawing I), ART130 (3-D Design) and ART110 (2-D Design).

MA, MFA Curriculum
Students working towards an MA and/or MFA degree, with concentration in Art Metal/Jewelry, must organize a Thesis Exhibition in their last year of study. Please refer to the Graduate Studies Bulletin for further information.
