The Art Education program at SFA expands students’ studio arts practice to engage with contemporary theories and methods using a range of approaches to teaching and learning. Our program focuses on meaning-making and direct engagement, considering the cultural, material, historical and technical aspects of art making and education. The Art Education program develops critical thinking through culturally responsive and participatory curriculum-building approaches using contemporary artists and issues. The BFA with Teacher Certification in Art prepares students for a career teaching art in elementary, middle or high school. Those completing the program also pursue careers in public and community art programs, as well as museum and non-profit art educational settings. Coursework includes professional education classes, art history and criticism, and a range of studio art practices. The program culminates with an invaluable internship and student teaching experience in a K-12 art setting.
