SFA STUDENTS' ARTWORK ON DISPLAY AT THE HOUSTON MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCE
On display through September 30, Houston Museum of Natural Science
Visitors to the Cockrell Butterfly Center of the Houston Museum of Natural Science expect to see hundreds of live butterflies in a natural setting, various species of arthropod housed in the Insect Zoo and thousands of preserved specimens of butterflies, moths and other insects in the Brown Hall of Entomology. What they probably don't expect to see is a juried exhibition of artwork by Stephen F. Austin State University art students that was inspired by a lecture on the Sphingidae Family of moths common to East Texas. But, there, hanging in one of the most heavily attended museums in the United States, are drawings, paintings and jewelry by nine SFA students, said Chad Erpelding, SFA assistant professor of art. The exhibition is the result of a collaborative project begun by Erpelding and Dr. William Godwin, entomologist in the SFA Department of Biology, to create a way for the SFA art and science communities to work together.

Using a group of old photos found at the East Texas Research Center in the Ralph W. Steen Library on the SFA campus as a guide, they attempted to pinpoint the exact positions where the pictures were originally taken and re-photographed the area to show the development of the town over the past 100 years.
