Professor of Art M.F.A. (1978), University of Wisconsin, Madison Biography For more than 30 years Robert Kinsell has been working as a realist painter. He holds degrees from DePauw University and the University of Wisconsin. Professor Kinsell has exhibited extensively in Houston, Texas, and the Gulf Coast, and in Chicago, Illinois, and the Mid West. Recently, he has been exploring digital media as a way of developing paintings and of producing prints. In all media, his work is premised on giving day to day objects a sense of narrative and mystery. Kinsell has been at Stephen F. Austin State University's Art Department for fourteen years, teaching Drawing, Design, Painting, Digital Media, and Advertising Design. Artist Statement I use familiar forms and familiar objects to increase the possibility of communication and interaction with the viewer. Art is a way for me to communicate the personal in a manner that hopefully makes my perceptions and concepts comprehensible, in some manner, to another person. My work has always been a way for me to mediate between myself and the world at large. Teaching Philosophy Teaching art puts me in a position of supposedly knowing the answers. As an artist, I know that, at best, I may know a few really good questions. When I work with a student, I try to convey as much knowledge as I have concerning the skills of a given discipline. I also hope to get the student to realize that those skills are worthwhile acquiring only if they help the artist convey or communicate something essential, something that asks the viewer one of those really good questions. Classes ART 100 Drawing I, ART 110 Design I, ART 210 Painting I, ART 261 Digital Media I, ART 270 Advertising Design I, ART 410 Painting III, ART 461 Digital Media II, and Graduate Studio courses.
