Assitant Professor of Art
M.F.A. (2004), University of Houston
Biography
Christopher Talbot is a photographer who works mostly in digital processes. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from Brigham Young University and a Master of Fine Arts from The University of Houston in Photography and Digital Media. His work in photography and education has taken he and his family on many national and international road trips including a four-year stay in Central America. Some of his panoramic photographs are in the permanent collection at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
Artist Statement
I am primarily a landscape photographer concerned with examining juxtapositions and contrasts; e.g., manmade versus natural, populated versus vacant, present versus historical, and scenic versus banal. I do not like the idea of cropping things out which, according to formulaic, ideal landscape practice, do not belong. I find it much more informative to examine the landscape and our relationship with it by including the elements purists tend to remove from view. By extension, I have evolved a photographic process that allows me to include, in one panorama, even more elements, more indicators of the passage of time, more evidence of disjuncture, and, most importantly, more realities and relationships--past, present, and future.
Teaching Philosophy
Teaching and learning are inextricably related to one another. When I am the teacher I find that I learn better because a synergy develops where more is revealed than what you originally prepared to deliver. I try to involve the students so that they have opportunities to teach also. Everyone has something that they can contribute and it is encouraging and helpful for them to do so.
