About The Project

The city of Nacogdoches, Texas, dates all the way back to the 1700s and is, in fact, known as the "oldest town in Texas." Intrigued by the town's past, we, a group of art students at Stephen F. Austin State University, set out to recapture historic locations throughout the town. Using a group of old photos found at the East Texas Research Center in the Ralph W.Steen Library on the SFA campus as a guide, we attempted to pinpoint the exact positions where the pictures were originally taken and re-photograph the area to show the developement of the town over the past 100 years. We conducted a video interview with Dr. Archie McDonald, a history professor at the university, in order to gain more insight about the background of the city. This project was a big learning experience for all the people involved, and we hope everyone who looks at it gets as much out of it as we did.

We would like to give a special thanks to Dr. McDonald from the Department of History, and Linda Reynolds from the ETRC for all of their time and help. Also, thank you to Professor Christopher Talbot for the idea behind the project and heading up both teams.
